Terms and Conditions

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account on SplitBill ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("User") and SplitBill ("we", "us", "our").

2. Description of Service

SplitBill is a group finance management platform that allows users to:

Create and manage shared expense groups (Trip, Roommate, Event, Project)
Track and split expenses among group members
Record and settle debts between members
Manage recurring bills and monthly payments
Scan receipts using AI-assisted parsing
Vote on group decisions via polls
Access spending insights and category analytics

The Service is provided as-is and may be updated, modified, or discontinued at any time.

3. Account Registration

3.1 Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use SplitBill. By registering, you confirm you meet this requirement.

3.2 Account Security

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. Notify us immediately at info@split-bills.org of any unauthorized access.

3.3 Accurate Information

You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration and to keep it up to date.

3.4 Email Verification

Some features (including paid subscriptions) require a verified email address. Google OAuth accounts are automatically verified.

3.5 One Account Per Person

You may not create multiple accounts. We reserve the right to terminate duplicate accounts.

4. User Responsibilities

You agree not to:

Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
Impersonate another person or entity
Upload malicious content or attempt to compromise platform security
Scrape, reverse-engineer, or extract data without permission
Use the Service to harass, abuse, or harm other users
Circumvent any payment or access control mechanisms

You are solely responsible for all content you submit, including expense descriptions, amounts, and attachments.

5. Groups and Members

5.1 Group Creator Responsibility

The user who creates a group ("Group Creator") is responsible for managing group settings, inviting members, and for any premium subscription associated with that group.

5.2 Guest Members

Groups may include guest members (name-only placeholders without accounts). You are responsible for ensuring guest data is added with appropriate consent.

5.3 Group Deletion

Deleting a group permanently removes all associated data, including expenses, payments, and member records. This action is irreversible. Any active subscription tied to the group will be cancelled automatically.

5.4 Leaving a Group

If you are the last member of a group, the group is automatically deleted upon your departure, including any active premium subscription.

6. Financial Transactions and Settlements

6.1 No Financial Services

SplitBill is an expense tracking and debt recording tool only. We do not process, hold, or transfer money between users. All settlement amounts are informational records based on data you enter.

6.2 Accuracy of Expense Data

You are responsible for the accuracy of all expense amounts, currencies, and splits entered. SplitBill is not liable for financial disputes arising from incorrect data.

6.3 Currency

The Service defaults to Bangladeshi Taka (BDT). Multi-currency expenses use exchange rates sourced from third-party providers at the time of entry. These rates are for reference only.

6.4 Payment Confirmations

Marking a debt as settled ("Mark as Paid") is a record-keeping action only — it does not transfer funds and does not constitute legal proof of payment.

7. Subscriptions and Billing

7.1 Premium Plans

Pricing is subject to change with 30 days' notice.

7.2 Billing

Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing, you agree to Stripe's Terms of Service. Your payment method will be charged at the start of each billing period.

7.3 Free Tier Limits

Free accounts are limited to: 1 group, 6 members per group, 5 receipt scans per month, and 3 months of expense history.

7.4 Cancellations

You may cancel a recurring subscription at any time via the Billing Portal. Access to premium features continues until the end of the paid period. No refunds are issued for unused partial periods.

7.5 Refunds

Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact us at info@split-bills.org within 7 days of a charge if you believe an error occurred.

7.6 Disputes

If you initiate a payment dispute or chargeback, the associated group will be immediately downgraded to the free tier pending resolution.

8. AI-Powered Receipt Scanning

The receipt scanning feature uses Google's Gemini AI to parse receipt images. By using this feature:

You consent to the image being sent to Google's API for processing
You understand that AI parsing may produce errors; you are responsible for reviewing and correcting scanned data before saving
Scan usage is metered per group per month based on your plan

9. Privacy and Data

9.1 Data You Provide

We store the data you enter to provide the Service, including expense records, group membership, and account details.

9.2 Analytics and Aggregated Data

We may use aggregated, anonymized data for internal analytics and platform improvement. Individual user data is never sold without explicit consent.

9.3 Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion by contacting info@split-bills.org.

9.4 Compliance

We aim to comply with applicable data protection laws, including the Bangladesh Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (PDPA 2023).

10. Intellectual Property

All content, design, code, and branding on SplitBill is owned by or licensed to us. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for its intended purpose.

You retain ownership of data you enter. By submitting content, you grant us a license to store and display it as necessary to provide the Service.

11. Third-Party Services

SplitBill integrates with the following third-party services:

Stripe — payment processing
Google Gemini — receipt scanning
Brevo — transactional email
Frankfurter — exchange rate data

We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or policies of these third-party services.

12. Disclaimers

The service is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. SplitBill does not provide financial, legal, or accounting advice. SplitBill is a record-keeping tool only.

13. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, SplitBill and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, revenue, or profits. Our total liability to you shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

14. Termination

14.1 By You

You may delete your account at any time from your account settings. Deletion cancels any active subscriptions and removes your personal data subject to legal retention requirements.

14.2 By Us

We may suspend or terminate your account at any time if you violate these Terms, engage in fraudulent activity, or for any other reason at our sole discretion. We will provide reasonable notice where possible.

14.3 Effect of Termination

Upon termination, your right to access the Service ceases immediately. Data associated with groups you created may be retained until all members leave or the group is deleted.

15. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms at any time. We will notify you via email or an in-app notification at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

16. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Bangladesh. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
