How to Use SplitBill

Track your own spending first, then split shared bills when friends, roommates, trips, or dinners enter the picture.

Personal Finance

Use SplitBill as your daily expense tracker for personal spending, income, budgets, savings goals, informal debts, and recurring costs.

1

Set Your Currency

Start your personal finance profile by choosing the currency you use day to day. SplitBill uses this for personal expenses, income, balances, and your hidden personal group.

Tip

SplitBill can auto-detect your locale, but you can choose another currency any time if your money life is different from your device settings.

Add Expenses and Income

Record daily spending, income, and recurring costs as they happen. Add a category, amount, description, and date so your monthly overview stays accurate.

Tip

Log small daily expenses too. Coffee, transport, and snacks are usually where the monthly surprise comes from.

Review Categories and Trends

Use category breakdowns, spending insights, and month-to-month comparisons to understand where your money goes before it becomes a problem.

Tip

Check your category totals weekly. It is easier to adjust spending while the month is still in progress.

4

Track Goals, Debts, and Recurring Money

Keep savings goals, informal lend/borrow notes, and personal recurring bills next to your daily expense history so your full money picture stays together.

Tip

Use personal debts for informal IOUs that do not need a full shared group.

Group Expense Splitting

Create a group whenever money involves other people. Split travel, dining, roommate, project, or event expenses with clear balances.

1

Create a Group

Start by creating a group for your trip, household, or any shared activity. Give it a name and choose a type — Trip, Roommate, Event, or Project — so the UI adapts to your use case.

Tip

Use the "Trip" type for travel. It unlocks expense categories like accommodation, transport, and meals.

Add Your Friends

Invite members by sharing the group's unique invite code or sending a direct email invite from the Members tab. Friends join instantly — no app installation required. You can also add guest members (name-only) for people without accounts.

Tip

Share the invite code via WhatsApp or Messenger. It's the fastest way to get everyone in.

Track Who Owes What

The Balances tab shows a real-time summary of who owes whom across all expenses. Green means you're owed money; red means you owe. Tap any balance to see the full breakdown.

Tip

Check balances after every group expense — you'll always know exactly where things stand.

Settle Up

When you're ready to settle, use the Settle Up feature. It automatically calculates the minimum number of transfers to clear all balances in the group — turning many transactions into just a few.

Tip

Debt simplification can reduce a group of 6 people's 15 possible transfers down to just 5. Less hassle, same result.

Smart Receipt Scanning

Skip the manual entry. Snap a photo of any receipt and let AI do the heavy lifting — handwritten or printed, in any language.

1

Snap a Photo

Take a photo of any bill — restaurant receipt, handwritten note, or printed invoice. Drag and drop or use your camera.

Tip

Works best with good lighting. Even crumpled receipts and handwritten notes are recognized.

AI extracts every item, price, and total. Review the results and adjust if anything needs correction.

Tip

Check the total — if it doesn't match, you'll see a warning. You can add or remove items manually.

Roommate Mode

Living with others? Set up recurring bills, track variable expenses, and see where your household money goes — all on autopilot.

1

Set Up Recurring Bills

Create bills for rent, utilities, internet. Choose fixed or variable, set frequency, pick participants. Fixed bills auto-split on schedule; variable bills wait for confirmation.

Tip

Start with your biggest recurring expense (like rent). Once it's set up, SplitBill handles it automatically every month.

Manage Your Bills

View all active and paused bills in one place. Filter by status, see when the next charge is due, and spot variable bills at a glance. Pause a bill when someone moves out temporarily, resume when they're back.

Tip

Variable bills are marked with an amber badge so you always know which ones need manual confirmation.

Confirm Variable Bills

Variable bills like electricity don't cost the same every month. When a variable bill is due, it shows up as "Pending" with a suggested amount. Review it, adjust if needed, and confirm to split among roommates.

Tip

You can change the split amounts before confirming — useful when one roommate uses more electricity or was away for part of the month.

Log Other Expenses

Not everything is a recurring bill. Groceries, cleaning supplies, a new router — add these one-off shared expenses just like you would in any group. They show up alongside your recurring costs so nothing gets missed.

Tip

Use categories to keep things organized. At the end of the month, you'll see exactly how much went to groceries vs. household supplies vs. everything else.

Track Spending Trends

See your household's total spending month-over-month. The trend chart helps you spot if bills are creeping up, compare seasonal changes, and have informed conversations about shared expenses.

Tip

Check this before the monthly rent meeting. It's easier to discuss shared expenses when everyone can see the numbers.
